Screw vegas. I just came from there yesterday and had the worst experience ever. Oh, and the Luxor blows. Try Mandalay Bay or MGM. Either way, it’s still vegas. It’s not a fun place to be unless you’re single.

It depends where what kind of entertainment you want and the type of hotel you want to stay in. Green Valley Ranch is a very nice casino/hotel and it is cheaper than other casino’s because it is a station casino. It is not near the strip so I don’t know if your looking for a romantic, quite place or a more distracting place. If you want to stay in the strip, try the Palazzo. My mom is a manager there and she just told me a couple of days ago that the rooms are running for about 100 a night. A little pricey but beautiful rooms!!! Blue man Group @ the Venetian is a must show to see!!! Also, that one show at the Wynn I heard is very nice!! Try going to a magic show!! just remember what happens in vegas stays in vegas so enjoy!!!

So far as shows go, I would go to the half price ticket booths around town and see what they have on special for that day. You can get some real deals there. Why pay full price when you can get it for about half. That is the best way if you have no particular show you want to see.
The Luxor is fine. Don’t believe everything you hear. You will always find good and bad reviews. Sometimes it’s to get even when they loose at the tables and has nothing to do with the rooms. A word of warning. Be prepared to pay and extra $10.95 per night resort fees. Those are not included in your room rates. Another piece of advice is to avoid the buffet at Excalibur. It has been voted worse in Vegas since the Boardwalk closed.

I will suggest getting a copy of the 2009 American Casino Guide on amazon.com It cost around $12.99. http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/casino-guide.php
It has tons of tips for Vegas and over 140 pages of coupons. Everything from two for one tickets to many shows including Madam Tussuad’s. There are lots of 2 for 1 entrees or buffets coupons, there are coupons for free money to gamble with, all sorts of stuff.

The luxor has a bar, Noir Bar, that makes these weird concoctions of martinis. peanut butter and jelly, carrot cake…
Luxor is kinda on the south end, you will have to do some serious walking to see the strip. just ask for an upgrade, we did when we went and they happily moved us to a better room. we tried to be the frugal tourist our first trip, left all the coupons in the room. You will find that by searching for the specific place you have a coupon for will waste time. dont waste your time with the buffets, way too over priced. try the cheap steak dinner at ellis island. a bit off the strip but well within a nice walking distance. ask the hotel if they have any freebies. when we went in january, if we showed our plane ticket at the riviera we got a free buffet. some players clubs will do that. eat at dennys and mcdonalds if you are wanting to eat cheap. vegas isnt what it used to be in terms of cheap food.
if you have time to do a timeshare (about 3 hours) you can get free dining certificates and show tickets, dont be afraid to tell them what YOU want,.

Luxor Reviews… http://www.ratelasvegas.com/hotels/ratings/h189.html
Don’t bother with the “$20 trick”… seriously you don’t think they have heard of that?
If you want an upgrade dress up for your arrival, explain to the desk clerk that this is a “Special Occasion”… Ask them about the availability of room upgrades, better floors, locations, whatever suits your fancy.
Make sure your special occasion is real or meaningful… We are celebrating our first date, our anniversary, our first vacation in 3 years or whatever.
Then ask them if there are any specials or …. you get the idea. It’s a negotiation.
People like to help people they like. Be likeable. People don’t like to feel like you are trying to game them.

The $20 sandwich is pretty effective here. Just have it folded between your drivers license and credit card when you hand it to the clerk and ask him/her to check to see if there are any “complimentry upgrades” or specials. This is not a “trick” as some people seem to think and it is not illegal. What you are doing is asking the clerk to put a bit more effort into hooking you up with the best possible room. Don’t expect a penthouse suite but there are thousands of available rooms. Some are way better than others and sometimes the clerk has a lot of leeway in selecting one. If they cannot or do not want to put in the extra effort they will simply return you tip and tell you there is nothing that they can do for you. Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Some of the hotels are offering unlimited use of the Buffet all day for $25. I know the Excalibur next door is and the Luxor is owned by the same people so it probably is too. The best buffet for the money is at Planet Hollywood.
