I visited Las Vegas like a month ago. And I’m sure you need to be at least 21 yrs old, because of all the alcohol, smoke, and bitches. Competition wise, I would say average because when I went, there weren’t many dealers during the day but during night it was packed. I remember my mom’s friend was a dealer and he told me that they took this program where they teach you how to deal. It shouldn’t take more than a year.

To become a dealer at a Las Vegas casino, you must first complete a dealer training course. Google : Crescent School of Gaming to see what kind of school I’m talking about. I believe it takes about 8 weeks for most table games, longer if you want to become a craps dealer (which I would suggest you do). Cost can vary, but is reasonable and they do sometimes offer financial aide.
After that, you simply apply at casinos and pass an interview and audition. The audition is a live trial where they watch you deal and decide if you are competent enough to be hired. It’s really no big deal if you’ve passed dealer school though. You must also pass a background check (i.e., you can’t have a criminal record) and may need to pass a credit check. No credit is probably fine, but bad credit could be a major red flag.
As far as where you’ll get hired right out of school, you’re basically going to get a job working the swing shift (possibly even part time) at a small, off the strip casino. All dealers everywhere make minimum wage plus tips, so you won’t make much money for awhile. Most strip casinos require at least 6 months of experience, so you’ve got to work for peanuts at the small places at least that long before you’ll get hired at a bigger casino. You should expect to be working the crappy shifts and getting paid under $10 and hour for 2-4 years. After that, the sky’s the limit. $35k-$50 is pretty common. The night and weekend dealers at the high end resorts can make six figures (but don’t expect to make that kind of money for a LONG time).
As far as the hiring environment goes, I honestly can’t tell you what it’s like right now. In the recent past, the placement rate out of the dealer schools was pretty much 100%. But right now gaming revenue is WAY down, and I have a hard time believing there are a lot of casinos hiring straight out of school dealers right now.
And yes, you must be 21. Oh and, if you happen to be an attractive (and thin) woman and don’t mind dressing provocatively, it REALLY helps. Some casinos (like Caesar’s) have special sections with attractive female dealers, and the requirements are a lot less stringent. Plus, you go straight into the higher limit, prime time tables.

If you have no experience….then you have to spend $$$$ to school for about 12 weeks. Then again, you can go to some of those horrible card rooms in states like Washington and get some experience, learn craps and roulette in your off time, then go audition in Vegas.
