Happy anniversary…
April is a great time to be in L.V. The heat hasnt arrived (nor have the excessive hotel price$).
Before i moved to LV, i would visit pretty frequently…. so i have a bit of a ‘feel’ for what’s going on about town.
Not sure how many days you will be in town .. nor what your budget is. I’m pretty budget-minded, so i’ll give a rundown of the ’spectrum’.
MUST SEE – Bellagio Fountains (shows @ night ea 1/2 hour) free
MUST SEE – Bellagio Conservatory (free)
MUST SEE – Fremont Street Experience (free) light/sound show downtown on Fremont, plays ‘on the hour’. Pretty cool stuff.
SUGGESTION – Red Rock Canyon.. it’s only $5 a car. Some neat rock formatoins/nature/etc. A nice break from the ‘zanyness’ of the city.
SUGGESTION – Big Elvis @ the Barbary Coast Hotel… he does 2 lounge shows daily & their in the early afternoon. They are free. This guy is really good. He usually packs them in.
SUGGESTION – Stratosphere Tower. It’s got awesome views. It’s twice as tall as the space needle. $9 to get up there & look around (extra for drinks in the bar/dinner in the restaurant/or thrill rides). Oh, the thrill rides are cool stuff.
If you’re driving in or have a rental car… i’d suggest Hoover Dam if you’re going to be in town for a while. It’s a nice day trip. If you do it… take the HARD HAT TOUR. ((( the one that the griswalds went on underground )))). If you have a car, hit Red Rock Canyon. Also, you can go to some off-strip resorts/casinos. These are places that will have a slower pace to them, lower denominations on the slots & the tables. And, if you’re a VP player — more favourable paycharts.
If you’re flying in & staying for 4 or more days… you may want to rent a car for just one day & get all the ‘off strip’ stuff out of the way. It will save you a ton of dough -vs- cabbing it to all of these places. Then, rest of your stay.. just play it clost to home (the hotel you booked). You can walk prettttty safely nearly anywhere on the strip from Mandy Bay up to Sahara Ave.
North of Sahara Ave (this is going towards the Stratosphere & downtown)… i would suggest walking TOGETHER or in a GROUP and during daylight hours. Things can get a bit ’sketchy’
Downtown.. if you stay on Fremont Street, you’ll be juuust fine, there are a ton of cops on bikes, horseback, etc.
BARGAINS:
Tix4Tonight (Tix4Tonight.com). They have 1/2 price show tickets to a LOT of shows in town. Basically they sell tickets for THAT days show (that would otherwise not be sold) at a discount… yep 1/2 price. You wont get into the mega-headliner shows, or the CIRQUE shows, but they usually have a good selection available. Example — i saw Carrot top for $27 (instead of $50 a few weeks back). If you’re flexible & can live WITHOUT front-row center seats… they will do ya fine!! Jump on their website and print out the ‘line-pass / discount coupon’, will save you time for sure!!!
Ellis Island – $4.95 steak special. Probably the best bargain in the entire city. It’s a locals joint that’s juuuust behind Bally’s. You can order the world famous un-advertised $4.95 steak special that supposedly no one KNOWS about, he he he. It’s a really good steak dinner (10 ounce filet cut sirloin), etc, etc. Cab drivers hit this place 24/7 for the ‘deal’.
The DEUCE bus… other than walking, it’s the most economical form of transport on the strip. Makes a ton of stops, so wont be as fast as a cab .. but there is ….. oooooh…. people watching (yikes).
The L.V. Monorail – it’s handyy for CERTAIN resorts. Check it out.
WHERE TO STAY:
Best value:
BARBARY COAST
GOLD COAST
IMPERIAL PALACE
SAHARA
Avoid:
EXCALIBER (the svc just keeps slipping, kids, blah)
CIRCUS CIRCUS (wayyyyy too many kids, strollers, the place is just run down.. it’s not a bargain at ANY cost)
If you have a ton of dough:
MANDY BAY
BELLAGIO
VENETIAN
WYNN (tons n tons of cash, they have a Ferarri Dealership next to the elvators ya know)
Well, i’ve already written a novel (sorry).. good luck.

Since you’re going for the first time and seek a wide variety of information on Las Vegas. Why not search through the “resolved questions”>(best answer) in this category. Find previously ask questions that interest you. You should be able to gather some great information in that way.

To help us give you a better answer.
1-The date you are going and how many nights are you staying?
room rates in LV vary greatly from day to day.
2-What amenities are you most interested in? Location? Pool? Room? Food? etc?
3-What is your price range per night?
4-Do you gamble? Slots? Tables? What you like to play? if you play slots what denomination and how much time per day, approximately? Same for tables, do you play Red/Green, and hours played? > NO, I’m not being nosey, this information would allow me to tell you which casino would most appreciate your level of play and if I know what you like to play, I can tell you which casino has that game at the level you want to play…
As an example – you like to play $5 a hand and you like to play Pai Gow Poker. In that case two of the best places to play would be Orleans and Palace Station – Or. we would really like to give Video Poker a try our bankroll is a small one and we want to make it last. Then nickel 9/6 JOB is the game you want to play and you can find this one in bunches at the Las Vegas Hilton.
Avoid special events, large conventions and going Sunday through Thursday will save you a fortune on the hotel…
Good Luck, have a great time, and congratulations!

I have been to Las Vegas many times and before I go each time I go to a book store and buy the UnOfficial Guide To Las Vegas. It has everything from maps to room rates, ratings of Hotels, Buffets, Shows, Casinos and Resturants. It gives a honest No BS Assesment on those and many other topics about Las Vegas. The only other thing I can tell you is if you dont rent a car take a limo from the airport to the hotel It only cost about $40.00 plus Tip but is worth every penny.
Good Luck Viva Las Vegas

You don’t have to worry about being safe on the Strip, or even Downtown. Only be wary of pickpockets: keep a close eye on your purse. The lounges are almost all free; just buy a drink. You can get many shows cheap by going to ticket discounters. There are multiple locations where you go early (11am or noon) the same day to see what’s available. Info at:

Nicer hotels with lower prices: Tropicana, Bally’s, Imperial Palace, Stratosphere, Four Queens (downtown), Main St. Station (downtown)
For your anniversary, a special splurge would be the Top of the World Restaurant at Stratosphere. The revolving restaurant is elegant, high-priced and a one-time must-see. I really enjoyed it, and I’ve heard it’s much nicer than the Eiffel Tower restaurant, which I haven’t been to. Remember to have maps to help you get around, good walking shoes because you will walk yourself sore, and do some research at the sites below for attractions, restaurants, shows, etc.

definitely mention to the check-in clerk that you’re there for your anniversary. or you can do the “$20 tip”, simply ask the clerk if there’s any complimentary room upgrade available (hold the bill with the credit card you’ll be checking in with so he can see it), if he says yes then tip him if not just ask if you can break the $20 bill so you wont feel awkward =)
