Most people don’t realize what consolidators are. Consolidators buy blocks of rooms then resell those rooms. This ensures business to the Hotels. So sites like Travelocity, Expedia, Hotwire, Priceline, Orbitz, etc… all fall into this category.
These sites are actually owned by a handful of companies… and ownership seems to change around a lot.
Can you get a good deal with these companies? Maybe. But like you say you may not get room selection and if you have a problem they are not always quick with the solution… especially with Air Travel.
Travelocity is owned by Sabre… which is a huge company that provides the backend database technology to travel agents.
These consolidators do not always disclose fees in an ethical way. So it’s really up to you.
Right now Vegas is not exactly booming so you may or may not save with them.
Your next alternative is to book direct through the Hotels. They are always trying to get the most they can but they are not unaware of the relationships they have with the consolidators. They make more profit by booking direct. And you can often get a better deal and better service by booking direct.
Marriott for example guarantees that booking direct they will always offer you the best rate.
Then there are the smaller players … well not exactly small but focused on Las Vegas… like Vegas.com or Las Vegas.com or in this case a site promoting a local company like this http://www.ablasvegas.com/vegas-hotels.html
These companies also have deals direct with the hotels or some backend broker.
So there really is no best way. My advice is this:
Shop the Expedia’s, Hotels.com… consolidators to see what is a good price.
Then call a Travel Agent and see what they can do for you.
Then call the Hotel Direct. You can do all this in a matter of an hour or so.
Don’t tell the hotel you’ve been shopping them until AFTER they give you a price… then you can say something like … I saw a price on Expedia for ____ so should I just book it there to get that rate? Then see if they offer you a better deal.
The market is very negotiable right now, although some people do not like to negotiate.
In any case the Best Deal is the one you find and there is no one place that is always going to give you the best deal. But it’s always important and free to ask for a lower price and ask for goodies like coupons, or dining credits.

Go to this site and you will see a search box for Vegas hotels. Put in the dates you are thinking of and it will give you the best hotel deals. It is better to book air and hotel separately.

You’re right; Expedia and other travel sites have good deals on flight/hotel packages but one of the big drawbacks is that your entire trip is non-refundable and non-flexible.
The good news is that you can book directly with your favorite hotel and still get an Expedia-size discount — if you know a few tricks.
The best way to get 25%+ discount on your room is sign up for the hotel’s “players club” or “guestbook” online and they will start emailing you promotions for low rates and other free stuff. If you don’t want to wait months to be emailed, you can visit a website that compiles all the Las Vegas hotels’ promotions for you:
1. http://www.vegaspromoguide.com shows you what the best promotions are based on the dates of your trip. They also show you how to book each promotion directly on the hotel’s website.
2. http://www.tripadvisor.com has a travel forum where people share any good promotions they’ve received.

It not so much which website sells the cheapest hotel rooms but it more important when you go. All hotels in Las Vegas follow a pattern. Now I am going to show you how to find the cheapest hotel rooms in Las Vegas HANDS DOWN….. Go to this website http://www.treasureisland.com/ and in the upper right hand corner click on Check Availability, and another window will open then click on GO in the check rate box and a calender will appear with prices of the hotel rooms at this hotel, if you see the prices are lower on certain days then all hotel rooms in Las Vegas are cheaper on those dates no matter what website you go to, to book your room, Hotels.com, etc….You can see what a HUGE different one day can make in your hotel bill. Hope this helps you..
