I reserved a standard room with two queens, but I know that sometimes the hotel will give you a free upgrade or a discount on an upgrade once you get there. Is this true? Any suggestions on how I can get a free or cheap upgrade to a larger room?

That is rare,
You could call and ask
and be nice and the person might do it for cheap.

Haha spending alot of money at the casino is a good way to get your room comped and upgraded.
Another thing that has gotten my room upgraded was to complain about the state of the room or that you smell smoke in the room (assuming your a nonsmoker)
Of course when I did that I had a legitimate complaint though so I guess keep your fingers crossed that you get a messy room!!

The are two tried and true methods. Ask nicely when you check in if they have a “complimentary” upgrade available
It’s a good idea if you know a little about the hotel and know what an upgrade is. Do you want a room with a view, jacuzzi, suite, etc.
A room with a view is usually the easiest upgrade.
The second is the $20 trick.

The site is wrong about one thing, you DO NOT hand over the $20 with your CC & ID.
When you are checking in, and while you are handing your CC & ID over ask if they have a “complimentary” upgrade available, in your other hand you have the $20. Yes, they will know what it’s for. He/she will either say “I can’t do that” or “let me take a look” if they take a look you have a pretty good chance.
When you get the keys to your upgrade is when you tell him/her thank you very much and give them the $20 handshake.

Call and ask… If it’s a convention weekend or something else big is happening (like a boxing match) it’s probably not going to happen, but you have nothing to lose by asking. You’ll have better luck if you’re coming to town during the week vs. a weekend – the hotels are often more full on the weekends, but if you come in midweek, there’s more likely empty rooms, and they’d rather fill the room.
Bonus points if you’re celebrating a special event – like a significiant birthday.
