I am going to Las Vegas in late July, hopefully Sun. the 22nd to Fri. the 27th. I’d love to search around for the next few weeks and find the right deal for a flight and 5 days hotel. But should I wait to book a deal closer to the date that I am actually going on? I joined the newsletters of a ton of hotels, and they send me promo codes and discounts- but most are for the next month or so.
Any information on this would be great.

in las vegas i have 35 minutes from when the plane lands until my next plane TAKES OFF.

First off congratulations on doing some wise things. Going Sunday through Thursday will save you money and signing up for e-mail up dates.
1-IMHO the very best thing you can do is book as far in advance as you can, then, keep on looking right up until a week before you leave.
2-Don’t book a package that you can’t get out of. (early on)
3-Check several travel sites to compare room rates, when you find out the lowest rate for your dates, call the hotel(s) that you are interested in and see if they will price match the online rate..
I stay at Orleans quite often because Coast properties do price match.

Room rates for 7/22 – 7/27
Orleans – $59 – 2 miles off the strip down Tropicans, has free shuttle to Barbary Coast from 9:30am to Midnight. Very nice rooms, good low limit table games, great cocktail waitresses with the hottest outfits in LV..Unfortunately for us video poker players Orleans has trashed their VP..
Gold Coast – $48 sister property to Orleans, also has the shuttle service, not nearly as nice as either the Orleans or Barbary Coast.
Barbary Coast – $70 – has the best location of any hotel/casino in LV, smack dab in the middle of LV blvd. Smaller hotel with very nice rooms and 40in plasma screen tv’s. No swimming pool
Sam’s Town – $32 – located on the Boulder Hyw – nice rooms, their indoor park(Mystic Falls) is a very romantic spot(IMHO) ..Great place to gamble, excellent VP/slots and table games. Good buffet. Free shuttle service to several locations on the strip and downtown..Their shuttles are actually greyhound type busses(very nice) – $32 is a heck of a deal for ST, the only drawback is the off strip location, if it’s your first trip you might want to stay on the strip.
Golden Nugget – $59 Sun/Wed and $109 for Thursday(?) for some reason the rate jumps $50 for Thur. downtown LV’s lone four star hotel, first class all the way..Very nice rooms, the new pool is really cool.
Stratosphere – $40 – North end of LV Blvd. the strip bus(Deuce) stops right in fromt. Rooms are ok, nothing great but not motel 6 either. European style adult pool. If you love heights and having the bejesus scared out of you, you’ll love the tower/rides…
I have stayed at all of the above hotels and would do so again.
If you’re interested in any of these, I would call and see if they will price match. The Coast hotels do, or have>Orleans, Gold Coast and Barbary Coast…All of the room rates above are very good ones. It depends on where you want to stay, the strip, downtown, off strip, Boulder Hwy…And, the amenities you’re looking for…The LVA site above will have ratings, reviews and links to each hotel, and you can read the reviews on http://www.cheapovegas.com they are usually at least worth a chuckle…

There are deals during every month – and the price varies if there are large shows – say technology and housing etc.
So try checking the travel agencies – and prices vary according to airlines too – and these 2 agencies compete for the best deals.
I do not consider any online agency that does not have an exact time or flight – and makes one bid on the flight? I need to know when I’m flying and they would book you at 6:00 a.m. which means being at the airport at 4:00 a.m. for security lines!
There are many deals at expedia.com and travelocity.com
lasvegas.com
There are casinos everywhere – so don’t feel you have to lose all of your money at one location.
There are roller coasters on top of tall buildings.
There are white tigers on the first floor side area of the Mirage.
There are outside shows at Treasure Island.
Gambling:
There are many where you can lose $50 without even trying, then win $10, then win another $50.
It’s easy to lose $100+ a day minimum, so if you’re smart
you’ll back away if you lose $20 – and try your luck another time, or another day.
Best location, and I stayed there January 2006, was the Mirage and it’s next to Treasure Island, across from Venetian Grand canal, and down the street are Bellagio and the Eiffel tower.
You can walk everywhere, or take the bus when your feet get tired (very cheap).
Don’t forget to lunch at the Eiffel tower – pricey but great, great food, and across from the fantastic Bellagio fountains that have themes – yes dancing fountains w/music when you’re outside to hear.
Lunch also at the revolving restaurant -where you can see all of Vegas during the day – THE STRATOSPHER. The food was magnificent and you can see if you go at lunchtime – where the people of Las Vegas live and the mountains that surround it.
Las Vegas – I saw Jay Leno and he was non-stop for 1 & 1/2 hours of jokes, and we got the last 2 seats in the far section, and it was still somewhat close because the entertainment area was well done!
We went to see Mystere show – and the best is called “O” which means water in French. The stage actually opens for people to dive into, and then closes for people to walk on it.
So amazing.
At the end of 7 days, I was ready to come home. It’s exciting, but not enough to say, wow someday I’d consider living there.
